Though Chivas won their battle against Santos by a score of 1-0, the much-needed victory was overshadowed by scenes of horrific violence during the match between Querétaro and Atlas at the Corregidora.
The post-match press conferences did not take place due to the events in Querétaro and on Sunday, Chivas’ Ricardo Peláez spoke with dismay over what had occurred on Saturday night.
“It is a very sad day for Mexico and the football industry. It is a general examination of conscience. Altogether, to think what is happening and try to reflect, I would say what has happened, it saddens not only the industry but the entire country.
“It is time for there to be a roundtable discussion so that people can attend. We are dismayed at Chivas and we regret what happened.
“First, accept the penalty and of course take action on the matter. It seems to me that it is time for there to be debate and try to find a solution as soon as possible so that people can attend a show, so that they can be distracted because that is football.
“Simply and I mean simply: this cannot happen at these kinds of events.”
Liga MX suspended all matches on Sunday following the tragic events.
