Sheffield United defender Rhys Norrington-Davies was having a brilliant season up until injury struck recently.

From the very start of the season, the Welsh international had worked his way into becoming a regular in Paul Heckingbottom’s side, whether it be at left-wing-back or centre back in a three.

Indeed, his fine form had even caught the attention of Wales boss Rob Page, featuring from the start in Wales’ matches versus Belgium and Poland back in September.

It felt a certainty that the 23-year-old would be a part of the Wales squad at the upcoming World Cup.

However, as above, injury then struck, with a hamstring injury keeping the defender out of action since the end of October.

With the Blades’ Championship action this side of the international break now wrapped up following a 1-0 win over Cardiff

Posting on Instagram, the 23-year-old wrote: “I’d like to take this time to thank everyone of you for your support recently.”

“Injuries are unfortunately part of the beautiful game we all love.

“I’ll be back & more hungry than before.”

Sheffield United next play in Championship action against Huddersfield Town on the 10th of December.

The Blades go into the World Cup break sitting second in the division.

The Verdict

This injury must have been well and truly gutting for Rhys Norrington-Davies.

Of course, any injury is, but one that rules you out of a World Cup is even more heart-breaking.

This, it could be argued, is even more so the case when it is down to a hamstring injury, an injury that may not have kept him out of a summer tournament, for example, but given how close the action is between the league pausing and World Cup beginning, plenty are going to miss the tournament through short-term problems.

Norrington-Davies must now focus on his recovery and getting fit for when the Championship gets back underway next month.

He can be an important player for this Sheffield United side as they seek promotion in the second half of the campaign.
