After a 2-0 win against Millwall last weekend, Sheffield United will have hoped they were in good form following a defeat on the opening day of the season.

However, the Blades faced a 1-0 defeat against West Brom midweek as they were knocked out of the EFL Cup.

Manager Paul Heckingbottom did make some changes to the team for Thursday’s game but the team was still a relatively strong one.

Despite being similar in terms of possession though, United allowed West Brom to have 18 shots, nine of which were on target whilst the Blades managed just two on target.

Rhian Brewster was one of the first team players in Thursday’s defeat so he took to Instagram to send a message to the fans following the defeat as he said: “Disappointed to get knocked out in the cup but all focus on Sunday now #utb”

United make the trip to Middlesbrough this weekend where they will be hoping to get back on track and come away with a result.

As it stands, the Blades currently sit seventh in the league and whilst positions don’t mean an awful lot at this stage in the year, three points would definitely provide them with a boost to bounce back.

The Verdict:

Thursday’s defeat in the EFL Cup was a disappointing one for Sheffield United. Whilst West Brom are also a good side in the league, the Baggies were the side who deserved the win and the Blades would’ve hoped to have given them more of a competition.

Furthermore, with a fairly good side in the cup too, it will have been disappointing for the manager not to have seen more for them.

That being said, Brewster’s Instagram post shows that the players are well aware of how disappointing the result was and are now looking to work hard to rectify it in the league.

With the Blades targeting promotion this season, a game against Boro with similar aims, will be a good test to show Heckingbottom where his team is at.
