This match was decided within minutes in either half as BVB continued their hunt for Champions League football next season and potentially, the Bundesliga title.

An early defensive error from Dortmund allowed Mainz to strike just after the one-minute mark as Lee Jae-sung redirected his thunderous header toward the goal.

But minutes later, Julian Ryerson (who was at fault for the opener) managed the pull the visitors level with his first goal for the club.

Over time chances were few and far between on both sides despite Dortmund having majority possession (63%). Mainz, in fact, didn’t register their second attempt on target until there were only 15 minutes to go.

The visitors looked particularly less creative on the night without star midfielder Jude Bellingham who was forced to sit out due to yellow card accumulation.

Youssouf Moukoko and Karim Adeyemi tried to put the visitors ahead, but their efforts fell short while Marcus Ingvartsen came whiskers away on a few occasions for the hosts.

Drama then ensued late as  Julian Brandt saw a penalty claim dismissed before Anton Stach had a late winner whisk wide of the net on a counterattack.

However, in the 93rd minute, substitutes Sébastien Haller and Giovanni Reyna combined to turn things 2-1 with seconds to go.

The result means Dortmund sit third in the table, one off of RB Leipzig and five off leaders Bayern Munich while Mainz are 12th.
