The 22-year-old American made 106 Bundesliga appearances (15 goals) and 27 Champions League appearances for BVB, whom he joined in 2019. In 2021, he helped Borussia Dortmund win the DFB-Pokal. It was in Dortmund that he established himself as an international for the United States of America.
“We have a long history with Gio. He enjoyed a meteoric rise at BVB at the beginning of his career, culminating in the cup triumph in 2021. Unfortunately, his development in recent seasons has not gone as we had all hoped. That's another reason why it is now time for him to start a new chapter in his sporting career. We wish Gio every success and hope that he stays fit and gets the game time and self-confidence he needs to rediscover his strong form of old in Mönchengladbach,” commented sporting director Sebastian Kehl.
Gio Reyna declared: “I can look back on a good time with BVB and have now decided to start a new chapter. I wish BVB all the best.”
