The Cityzens safely negotiated their way to the semi-final stage where they were paired with reigning European champions Lyon.
Manchester City lost the first leg of their semi-final tie 3-1 at The Academy Stadium and they faced an uphill challenge as they travelled to the Parc Olympique Lyonnais for the second leg.
FAWSL Full-Time take a look back at that tie, a match which saw Manchester City put on a brave performance despite exiting the competition.
Lyon dominated a goalless first half and Karen Bardsley had to be on top form to push the ball behind following a vicious strike from range from Dzsenifer Marozsán. Amel Majri also forced a block from the Manchester City keeper as the hosts looked to increase their first leg lead.
Jill Scott tested Lyon keeper Sarah Bouhaddi early in the second half before Manchester City captain Steph Houghton was fortunate not to divert the ball into her own net at the other end.
Bouhaddi then pushed a Carli Lloyd effort to safety before she gifted the United States international the ball moments later and the forward rifled her shot into the roof of the net.
Manchester City had 35 minutes left on the clock to net further goals but Lyon recovered well from Bouhaddi’s blunder to keep the scoreline at 1-0 and advance to the final.
Lyon went on to lift the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy again with a 7-6 penalty shootout victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final in Cardiff following a goalless 120 minutes.
