Zlatan Ibrahimović will not be joining Swedish side Hammarby IF as a player, as many outlets (including this one) speculated on Tuesday.
But the 38-year-old has in fact bought a quarter of the Stockholm-based club and has vowed to help them become the best team in Scandinavia.
The deal is a continuation of Ibrahimović’s relationship with sport and live entertainment company AEG, who own a stake in Hammarby.
“Hammarby is a great club, with passionate supporters and a respected history in Stockholm and throughout Sweden,” said the former Barcelona, Manchester United and LA Galaxy striker.
“I´ve always admired Hammarby and its fans, and I’m impressed by the club’s performance over the past years both on and off the field.
“I am excited for the opportunity to continue my relationship with AEG while supporting one of the most interesting and influential clubs in Sweden.”
After leaving LA Galaxy at the end of the MLS season, Ibrahimović is currently in the market for a new club and it had appeared that he was set to make a fairytale return to Swedish football.
But it seems that won’t be the case, at least not at this moment in time.
Reports in Italy this week suggest veteran hit-man is more likely to return to AC Milan, for whom he previously played between 2010 and 2012.
