Lautaro Martinez has committed his future to Inter Milan as he’s realized that there is nowhere better for him to be.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, detail the 26-year-old’s reason for penning a contract extension with the Nerazzurri until the end of June 2029.

Now everything is official.

Martinez has signed a new contract with Inter until the end of June 2029.

The negotiations between the Argentine and Inter have been ongoing for the past year or so.

Martinez’s previous deal had run until the end of June 2026. Therefore, there was not exactly a rush to find an agreement on a new one.

But at the same time, it was always clearly a priority for the long term.

Inter made Martinez their captain last summer to replace Samir Handanovic. That reflects both the 26-year-old’s importance on the pitch, and his leadership role in the team.

The Nerazzurri were keen to tie their captain down on a new deal sooner or later.

Why Lautaro Martinez Committed Future To Inter Milan

The new contract for Martinez looks obvious in hindsight.

But it is not as though the negotiations between Inter and the Argentine’s agent were a smooth road without any bumps in it.

Particularly the matter of wages was a sticking point that lasted for months.

In the spring, Martinez’s agent publicly spoke about the fact that there was financial distance in the talks. He made no secret of the fact that Inter weren’t offering what he and Martinez expected.

But then, reportedly, Martinez personally instructed his representative to accept an offer from Inter.

The 26-year-old did not drag the talks out in search of higher wages.

In the view of the Gazzetta, that reflects the fact that Martinez realized that the grass would not be greener if he left Inter.

It is hardly impossible that Martinez could earn more if he joined a different club.

But the likelihood of moving to a team where the Argentine would have the kind of tactical fit, relationship with the fans, and captain’s role, would be next to none.

Martinez realized, simply put, that it would be wise to stay where he is.

And this was the decisive factor that moved Martinez and Inter to an agreement on a new contract.
