But AS says the midfielder was all set to sign for Valencia before the start of the season after Gracia had lost Francis Coquelin to Villarreal. The youngster had been identified as a direct replacement.

Indeed, contracts from City were in the offices of the Mestalla waiting to be signed, but the club's lawyers stalled after getting word from owner Peter Lim to shut down any incoming deals.

Herrera waited for a week before finally losing patience and choosing to join Granada on August 30. Before then, he reportedly penned fresh terms with City to 2024.

In 20 games this season, Herrera has scored an impressive six goals.

Venezuela international Herrera, 22, was first signed by City in 2017 from Atletico Venezuela and loaned immediately to MLS satellite club New York City FC. He has since spent the past 18 months on-loan in Spain, first with Huesca and now at Granada.
