Tottenham are continuing to keep tabs on Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar going into the January window, Football Insider has been told.

Spurs held extensive talks with the Serie A giants about recruiting the centre-back, 25, during the last window.

But the two clubs could not agree terms after a series of bids from the Premier League giants were knocked back.

Tottenham went on to sign Joe Rodon from Swansea City during the short domestic-only window in October for an £11million fee rising to £15m.

But the capture of the Wales international, who made an assured Premier League debut against Chelsea last Sunday, does not mean Spurs’ pursuit of Skriniar is dead in the water.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that the Slovakia international was Mourinho’s top central defender target in the summer.

The Portugese would still be keen on landing Skriniar in January if he is available.

Inter were willing to let him go in the summer to raise much-needed funds but held out for a fee well in excess of £40m.

Tottenham were not willing to pay that in such challenging times and that is likely to be the case in January.

It will need the Italians to reduce their asking price for a deal to have any chance of being agreed.

Spurs may be forced into the market if Toby Alderweireld’s injury proves to be worse than the maximum four-week lay-off expected, or if a buyer can be found for Davinson Sanchez.

The Colombia international has been frozen out since a wretched display in the 3-3 draw against West Ham on 18 October and his long-term future at the club is up in the air.

Skriniar has started only four of Inter’s nine Serie A matches this season but missed three of those due to contracting Covid-19.

He joined Inter in 2017 and has made 134 appearances in all competitions.
