Revealed: The two players Liverpool wanted BEFORE ending up with Andy Robertson

It's been revealed that Liverpool star Andy Robertson was never the Reds' first choice when they sought a left back to challenge Alberto Moreno for the starting spot under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool's business in recent years has been far superior to many of their rivals with Robertson's £8 million move in 2017 being one of the standout coups.

Much to the annoyance of rival fans, the Reds very rarely miss when it comes to not just incomings with some of their most expensive recruitments in Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker also proving to be bargains.

However it has been disclosed that Robertson wasn't even Liverpool's second-choice option, let alone first.

Former Liverpool Head of Research Ian Graham has exclusively revealed that there were two defenders ahead of Robertson.

"You're doing well even if your number one target brings everything to that position. In the book [How To Win the Premier League], I talk about signing Robertson and how he wasn't the first choice.

"But Benjamin Mendy was always going to go to Manchester City so the finances just went ridiculous - and there were other reasons not to sign him too.

"Emerson Palmieri, who was at AS Roma at the time, did his ACL on the last day of the season and between those three there wasn't much in it," Graham said to Liverpool.com.

FROM THIRD-CHOICE OPTION TO CLUB LEGEND

It goes without saying Liverpool ended up with the best option as Robertson has been a mainstay in Liverpool's success story during the Jurgen Klopp era, cementing his spot as a club legend.

Last weekend's dominant display at Old Trafford saw the Scotsman make his 300th Liverpool appearance.

"To be here for this number of years is something that I'm proud of. It's very difficult to play at the top level for a long time. I'm now going into my eighth season and I'm very fortunate to still be here and still be playing," Robertson said to Liverpool FC.

In his time on Merseyside thus far, he's won a Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup, two Carabao Cups and a Community Shield.

Robertson established himself as one of the members of Jurgen Klopp's leadership group that spearheaded Liverpool to domestic and European glory.
