Manchester City forward Phil Foden is expected to return to the England squad ahead of their last-16 clash against Slovakia this weekend.

The 24-year-old left the England camp to return to the United Kingdom earlier this week, with Phil Foden flying home to attend the birth of his third child on Wednesday, after the FA announced the dramatic temporary departure of the Manchester City forward.

Foden, who is one of three Manchester City players to be selected by Gareth Southgate for the tournament, has started all of England’s games at the European Championship so far, including Tuesday’s goalless draw in Cologne.

England have won just one game at the tournament so far, with the Three Lions stumbling to successive draws against Denmark and Slovenia following a 1-0 win over Serbia in their opening Euro’s group game.

Southgate and England have been subject to fierce criticism but have been handed a fortunate path to a second consecutive European Championship final, with England facing Slovakia in the last-16 on Sunday.

England play Slovakia at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen this weekend, and will face either Switzerland or Italy in the quarter-finals, should Southgate’s side progress.

Manchester City’s Phil Foden is expected to return to Germany for the last-16 clash with Slovakia on Sunday, after the Football Association announced that the Englishman had temporarily returned to the UK.

The Daily Mail report that Foden will play in England’s last-16 fixture this weekend, with the 24-year-old planning to rejoin the squad before the match.

“Phil flew home for the birth of his baby but he is expected to be back in Germany in time to play in England’s second round match on Sunday evening,” an FA source told the MailOnline.

Foden is one of 12 Manchester City players to have reached the last-16 of the tournament, with six of the remaining nations featuring members of Pep Guardiola’s squad.
