The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed that Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga will host the much-anticipated MTN8 final between defending champions Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC on 13 September.
Interestingly, the match will be a repeat of last season’s final in the same competition, with the Buccaneers reigning supreme with a 3-1 scoreline, thanks to goals from Monnapule Saleng, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Relebohile Mofokeng.
As a result, Pirates secured their third top eight title in a row, becoming the first team in PSL history to achieve the feat. They achieved this under the tutelage of Spanish mentor Jose Riveiro, who has since left the club to take over the reins at Al Ahly.
Now, with Abdeslam Ouaddou at the helm, the Sea Robbers will be eager to extend their record and continue asserting their dominance by clinching the MTN8 title for a fourth successive season in a bid to make it a total of 14 titles won in the competition.
In the ongoing campaign, Pirates claimed a 2-0 victory over Polokwane City in the quarterfinals, before overcoming Mamelodi Sundowns in the two-legged semi-final, courtesy of a 4-1 penalty shootout victory after a 2-2 aggregate score across the two legs.
Meanwhile, Steve Barker’s side secured a 3-2 win at the expense of AmaZulu in the first round, prior to brushing aside Sekhukhune United 3-1 to book their spot in the deciding-match for the second season in a row.
It remains to be seen who will come out on top between Bucs and Stellies next month, with both teams looking to etch their names in the cup’s history.
