Cat Radio have revealed details of how the events evolved between Lionel Messi and former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu. Reportedly, the relationship between the two was ‘non-existent’, and often, Jorge Messi — Lionel Messi’s father and agent — was the mediator.

It is no secret now that Messi wanted to leave the Catalan club in the summer of 2019 after the Argentine lost his hope in the club project following the third consecutive disaster in the Champions League, this time a 2-8 loss against Bayern Munich.

Despite the promises that were made (such as the fact that Leo had no binding contract and could leave at the end of ‘any’ season), his exit was blocked by Bartomeu, and the Argentine did not want to sue Barcelona, the club of his love.

Bartomeu was only able to talk to Messi’s father and, finally, he achieved what he wanted, that Messi did not leave Barça while he was president. Although he was never able to recover any kind of personal relationship.

According to the reliable Catalan outlet, Bartomeu met with Messi at his house in Castelldefels, Argentina. The president had asked him whether he should take action about Ernesto Valverde, the club’s coach at that time. Leo explained that the coach was not the problem, and rather the project.

Messi asked the president whether it is true that the club had signed Antoine Griezmann and whether it would block the potential return of Neymar. Despite the fact that Bartomeu told Messi that the Frenchman was not signed, days later the player’s transfer was made official.

Leo never trusted Bartomeu again, and defined him as a ‘compulsive liar’ and a few months later following the 2-8 humiliation, after the Argentine’s meeting with Ronald Koeman was leaked (the report said that Messi was closer to leaving than staying), Messi wrote one last message to the president: “You are already f….ing me again, d..n it.”

Five days later, the famous ‘burofax’ arrived at the club offices.
