Talismanic Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu will return to the starting line-up in tonight’s UEFA Champions League match against Arsenal.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by FCInterNews, Calhanoglu’s recovery comes as a vital boost for Simone Inzaghi’s charges.
Inter lost the 30-year-old playmaker to injury in a hard-fought 1-0 Serie A triumph at Roma on October 20.
Therefore, he wasn’t on the pitch as the Nerazzurri needed Marcus Thuram’s stoppage-time heroics to beat Young Boys.
A last-gasp triumph in Bern preserved Inter’s near-flawless Champions League start, making it two wins and a draw in three games.
However, Premier League title hopefuls Arsenal will put their continental credentials to the test this evening.
Given the strength of the opposition, Inzaghi must be thrilled to have Calhanoglu at his disposal again.
Inzaghi was unable to call upon Calhanoglu in a 4-4 draw against Juventus.
But the Turkish ace showcased his significance to Inter with a delightful 30-minute cameo against Venezia last weekend.
Tonight will be his first start in a fortnight, and that’s a potentially good omen for the Nerazzurri.
Indeed, they’ve won an eye-catching 67% of their matches with Calhanoglu in the starting line-up.
Against this backdrop, the percentages plummet to 59% when he’s unavailable for selection.
With that in mind, it’s fair to say he’s irreplaceable.
It’s almost impossible to replace a player of Calhanoglu’s characteristics.
His vision and passing are off the charts, making him indispensable.
But Calhanoglu alone may not be enough to topple Arsenal.
Therefore, Inzaghi will turn to Piotr Zielinski and Davide Frattesi to team up with the ex-AC Milan ace in the engine room.
Indeed, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Nicolo Barella will likely start on the bench.
That’s part of Inzaghi’s plan to have fresh legs for the upcoming Serie A showdown against Napoli.
