The only addition to Liverpool’s squad this summer was Federico Chiesa and it has now been revealed that Bayern Munich turned down the opportunity to sign the Italian before he arrived at Anfield.

The 26-year-old signed a long-term contract with Liverpool after arriving for an initial fee of around £10 million and is yet to make his debut for Arne Slot’s team.

After missing out on Luciano Spalletti’s most recent Italy squad, the 51-cap winger will have some time to get his fitness up ahead of Liverpool’s next Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

It was reported throughout the window that Liverpool were one of a number of clubs interested in signing Chiesa for a cut-price as he only had one year remaining on his contract in Turin, but the Reds were the team to get the deal over the line and the forward will play his football in Merseyside this season.

Bayern rejected Chiesa

According to Christian Falk on his Bayern Insider podcast, Chiesa was offered to Bayern Munich before Liverpool made their move to sign him.

Bayern Munich completed the signing of Michael Olise from Crystal Palace but were apparently keen to bring in more attacking reinforcements.

A move to Bavaria never materialised however, with Bayern in the end insisting they were happy with their current attacking options.

Liverpool had also been in the market for attacking reinforcements and, after an early summer move for Anthony Gordon fizzled out, the Reds eventually decided Chiesa was their man.

What will Chiesa add to Liverpool?

Although the Italian has faced a tough battle with injury since suffering a cruciate ligament tear that saw him miss most of 2022, he featured in 33 of Juve’s 38 league matches last season and Liverpool will be hopeful that the winger’s injury-plagued days are behind him.

Chiesa joins Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo in Liverpool’s attacking department and he will have a lot to offer at Anfield.

A video of Chiesa taking part in training with the U21s emerged recently and he has received praise from those at the club for his quality.

Liverpool supporters will be hoping that Chiesa’s performances in red this season make Bayern Munich kick themselves for passing on Anfield’s new star.
