Chelsea made a move for Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt last week, it has been revealed.

Tuttosport says Chelsea and Barcelona both made attempts to open talks with Juve about a price for the Holland international.

However, both approaches were given short shrift by Juve.

The Bianconeri view De Ligt as a future captain, indeed there's internal discussion about the youngster taking the armband next season should Giorgio Chiellini depart.

Juve paid Ajax €75m two summers ago for De Ligt, who has a contract to 2024.
