Mateo Retegui continues to impress in the early days of his life as Italyā€™s number nine.

The 23-year-old was the surprise package in Roberto Manciniā€™s Euro 2024 qualifying squad, but has rewarded the bossā€™ decision by etching his name into the Italian history books.

By heading home a Sandro Tonali corner-kick in the first half of Italyā€™s qualifier against Malta tonight, Retegui showed just how quickly he is settling into life with the Azzurri.

That is two goals in two appearances for the national team.

The centre-forward position has long been a sore spot for the Italians, but in Retegui, Mancini may have his man up-front for the upcoming tournaments.

Only Giacomo Raspadori has more goals for Italy than Retegui in the last 12 months (four to two).

A win tonight against Malta will send Italy back up into second place in Group C.
