The groups of the 2020 Campeonato Paulista were drawn on Tuesday. Corinthians won their third-straight state title last year, defeating São Paulo 2-1 on aggregate with Vágner Love scoring a dramatic 88th-minute winner in the second leg.

  1. Group A: Santos, Ponte Preta, Oeste, Água Santa
  2. Group B: Palmeiras, Novorizontino, Botafogo-SP, Santo André
  3. Group C: São Paulo, Ituano, Mirassol, Inter de Limeira
  4. Group D: Corinthians, Ferroviária, Guarani, Bragantino

The format will be similar to last year’s tournament with a few huge differences. Each team plays all of the 12 teams from outside of their group.

The top two teams in each group advance to face one another in the quarter-final knockout stage.

However, unlike in past tournaments, this year’s edition will feature single-elimination matches in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, as opposed to the two-legged ties in years past.

The final will continue to be fought for over two legs. In the last two editions of the tournament, São Paulo’s four elite clubs (Santos, Palmeias, São Paulo, and Corinthians) have all made it to the semi-finals.

The two worst teams in terms of points, no matter how they are positioned in the groups, will be relegated to the Paulista A2 tournament.

Last season, São Caetano and São Bento were relegated, making way for 2019 Paulista A2 champions Santo André and third-placed Água Santa.

Red Bull Brasil took home second place in last year’s Paulista A2, but since Bragantino are also owned by Red Bull, RB Brasil were not eligible to compete.
