Tottenham preparing for life after Jose Mourinho, claims Duncan Castles

Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, reputed journalist Duncan Castles has claimed that Tottenham are readying themselves for the possibility that Jose Mourinho may not be at the club next summer.

Mourinho has been with Tottenham since November 2019, having taken over the reins after Mauricio Pochettino was let go. However, it has been a rocky ride for the Portuguese manager in north London.

Having failed to take us to Champions League football in his first season, it looks like Mourinho could fail to do so once again. Indeed, Spurs are without a win in their last three Premier League games (D2 L1), most recently being held to a 2-2 draw by Everton on Friday.

This has left us as outsiders in the top-four race while the club also crashed out of the Europa League in disheartening manner. As a result, Mourinho has come under intense pressure with regard to his job.

Castles, now, has claimed that Tottenham are now preparing for life after Mourinho, in the sense that the club is readying two transfer shortlists for the summer, one with Mourinho’s inputs and one where the club is looking at beyond the Portuguese.

“What I can tell you is that in terms of recruitment of players in the summer, Tottenham are currently working with two different transfer lists. One of those is with Jose Mourinho still continuing as the manager, and one of those without. “It is interesting because it indicates that they haven’t made that final decision. It fits with the information we have that Mourinho is unsure of whether he’ll still be there at the end of the season, and of course it depends on how they end this season.”

It is certainly an interesting development, if true. Another report from Football.london also hinted that chairman Daniel Levy could be forced into cutting ties with Jose at the end of the season.

A top-four finish and the Carabao Cup win could still give Mourinho with a fighting chance to save his job. But as things stand, it looks like we may not see him in the dugout for next season.
