Repubblica: Lega want to reduce number of Serie A teams after Coppa Italia downsizing | OneFootball

It seems as though Lega Serie A are determined to revamp the structure of Italian football, both regarding the Coppa Italia and the league.

It has already been announced that the Coppa Italia format will change again from next season with only 40 clubs participating, namely the teams in Serie A and Serie B, meaning those in Serie C and even Serie D are no longer able to complete. The change is apparently to make the games more ‘appetising’ for television rights and viewers.

According to La Repubblica (via MilanLive), they are not done there. The Lega’s intention is to restore an 18-team Serie A which would mean the exclusion of two clubs in the future, to match the system already in place in the German Bundesliga.

Of course, it would be another unpopular decision that could create discontent on the part of medium-low-ranking clubs who now have less chance of reaching their dream. For Serie A it would be a return to origins, given that up until 2004-05 the top league consisted of 18 participants.

The choice would have been dictated by the provisions of UEFA , in particular regarding the new formula of the Champions League as from the 2024-25 season the competition will go from 32 to 36 teams.
