Reports: Milan to replace Maignan on Champions League list with Tatarusanu

Mike Maignan has sustained a serious calf injury and will be on the sidelines for about a month. Bad news for AC Milan, who now must decide whether to exclude him from the Champions League list or not.

If it had been an outfield player, the Rossoneri wouldn’t have been able to make any changes to the squad. With goalkeepers, however, the rules require a team to have two goalkeepers available and thus a serious injury is treated differently.

Once the recovery time is 30 days or more, clubs are allowed to replace that goalkeeper with another one on List A. According to various sources (via SempreMilan), such as Gazzetta Dello Sport, Tuttosport and Antonio Vitiello, Milan intend to make use of this.

Evaluations are still ongoing but it makes sense to include Ciprian Tatarusanu, seeing as Maignan probably would be available only for the last group-stage game. Antonio Mirante is the other goalkeeper on the list, of course, but he has always been the third choice.

It should be noted that once the 30-day window has passed, Milan will be able to reinstate Maignan on the list again.
