Rafael Leao has lost his appeal against the sentence imposed on him of having to pay Sporting CP €16.5m as the fall-out over his exit continues, a report claims.

According to Calcio e Finanza, the Lisbon Court of Appeal rejected the appeal presented by Leao to obtain an annulment of the decision of the Portuguese Sports Arbitration Court, which ordered him to pay €16.5m to Sporting as compensation for the unilateral resolution of the contract which took place in June 2018.

It all came about because fans invaded the training facility and used aggression to get their point across to the team that they are not happy with their performances, with some players deeming that to be unacceptable to the extent they left, and Leao went on to Lille.

The report cites Portuguese newspaper Record in claiming that the request was presented by the winger and was rejected on Friday, which is why the decision of the TAD (the Portuguese court) was confirmed.

It was back in March 2020 when they ruled the following: “The player to pay to the Sporting the amount of 16.5 million euros (plus interest), as compensation for the unlawful termination of the sports employment relationship.”

They actually originally requested €45m as that was the release clause in his contract, so a figure between €15m and €18m was deemed as fair value for compensation. Now the player can appeal as a last resort to the Supreme Court, in the hope of having his reasons accepted.
