Arsenal’s presumed lack of Champions League football next season won’t stop them from investing in the squad, according to a report.

Arsenal’s defeat to Newcastle United on Monday effectively ended their hopes of a finish in the top-four. To reclaim fourth, they’d now need relegated Norwich City to win just their sixth game of the entire season – against Spurs.

So it will be Europa League football next season, barring a miracle, but Arsenal are still planning a big summer of spending.

The Telegraph report that Arsenal see the upcoming window as a major opportunity and have been planning for a busy few months with or without Champions League.

There’s no denying that the Champions League would have given them extra funds and improved their draw with regards to the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Youri Tielemans, but returning to any form of European competition is still in keeping with the long-term plan.

A centre-forward is the priority, and Arsenal will also be looking to strengthen in midfield.

The Telegraph reference the links to Bologna full-back Aaron Hickey as well, but deny that a deal has already been agreed.

It’s undeniable that Arsenal need to invest as heavily as they did last summer if they want to keep moving forwards.

The last summer window centred around the signings of a number of players who were always going to need a bit of time to hit their stride, particularly when they were joining a lineup starring multiple u21s like Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe.

But this window has to prioritise the short term. Arsenal need additions to improve the starting lineup in 2022/23.

From that point of view, it’s good to hear the club are still planning to make big moves this summer.
