Why Tottenham Hotspur aren’t prioritising Jan Oblak transfer from Atletico Madrid to replace Hugo Lloris

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a host of goalkeepers as they look to replace Hugo Lloris between the sticks, with Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak a high-profile option.

However, the Express, citing Football.London, states that it is indicated Tottenham will look to sign a younger option in goal. Oblak, of course, turned 30 in January this year.

The Slovenia international, nevertheless, is a world-class goalkeeper and has, for many years, been one of the best in the world at what he does.

Brentford’s David Raya, Brighton & Hove Albion shot-stopper Robert Sanchez, Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson and Everton star Jordan Pickford have all been linked with Spurs as well.

Valencia’s 22-year-old goalie Giorgi Mamardashvili is also a top target for the Lilywhites despite his £88million release clause. There have been many young goalkeepers linked with us in recent months.

Smart choice?

And understandably so. We would be replacing Lloris, who is 36 and is out of contract in the summer of 2024, and we wouldn’t want to engage in another search for a new first-team goalkeeper just a few years down the line.

Oblak, make no mistake about it, is world-class. But at 30, he could be on the decline. He has been an elite stopper for Atletico Madrid since the summer of 2024 and has all the experience in the world when it comes to playing at the very top level.

But it’s perhaps a smart choice if we are considering someone in their early or mid-20s. That is, of course, if we are sure that the player we sign is already very good and capable of replacing the France icon instantly.

We can’t sacrifice experience and quality just to chase a youngster on a hunch. The reason why we haven’t had to worry about the goalkeeper position for nearly a decade is because we invested well in Lloris when it was clear he was on course to becoming a world-class superstar.
