Chelsea youngster Nathan Baxter wanted by Hull City, Sunderland

According to BBC journalist Matt Dean (h/t Sunderland Echo), Chelsea goalkeeper Nathan Baxter has emerged as a transfer target for Hull City, with Sunderland also keen on signing him.

Baxter is a product of the Chelsea youth academy. The 22-year-old goalkeeper has been on the club’s books since 2007 and has risken through the ranks, representing the Blues across all age group levels. He has even the UEFA Youth League with the club but has never made a first-team appearance till date.

Baxter, though, has spent a lot of time out on loan in the recent years, having had stints with the Metropolitan Police FC, Solihull Moors, Woking FC, Yeovil Town and Ross County. The English shot-stopper was on a temporary spell with Accrington Stanley for the 2020/21 season, where he made 19 appearances, securing eight clean sheets.

Back at Chelsea now, Baxter is unlikely to progress into the first-team with Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga locking down the two goalkeeping positions. Although, it must be noted that the latter has been linked with an exit from the Bridge this summer, with former boss Maurizio Sarri keen on a reunion at Lazio.

As things stand, the 22-year-old is courting serious interest from Sunderland as it is. But the Black Cats how now been joined by Hull City in the race for the goalkeeper. The Tigers, as per the report, are keen on taking Baxter on a season-long loan deal for the young Englishman.

Given his situation, Baxter looks primed for another loan move away from Chelsea this summer. There is also the possibility that the club decide to cash in on him with two years still left on his deal, to get a sizebable transfer fee. It will be interesting to see what’s in store for the 22-year-old this summer.
