Leeds United lead Tottenham in Joe Gelhardt pursuit

According to a report from the Daily Mail, newly-promoted Premier League outfit Leeds United have edged past Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic in the race for the signing of Wigan Athletic youngster Joe Gelhardt.

The 18-year-old Gelhardt is a product of the Wigan youth academy. Having come through the youth ranks, the teenager has become a first-team regular this season. Till date, he has featured 19 times across all competitions for the Latics’, scoring one goal.

The centre-forward has also turned up twice for Wigan’s U18 side in the FA Youth Cup, scoring two goals in the process.

With Wigan Athletic being put into administration, a number of clubs are swooping in to pluck away talented players from the club on the cheap. Tottenham are reportedly closing on the signing of 15-year-old prospect Alfie Devine from the Latics in a £500,000 deal.

The club are also linked with attacker Sean McGurk, while Joe Gelhardt is also amongst the targets for the North Londoners. Apart from Tottenham, the likes of Celtic, Everton and Liverpool are also vying for the teenager’s signing. (h/t Daily Mail)

However, we could set to taste defeat in the race for the latter, as Leeds United have stolen a march on the rest of the suitors for the teenage striker. (h/t Daily Mail)

Strengthening the first-team in the summer is very much pivotal for the club after a mixed campaign. At the same time, adding young talent to the youth ranks should not be overlooked.

Bringing in someone with as  much potential as Gelhardt would serve us well for the future. However, with Leeds now pushing forward, we may miss out on the 18-year-old.
