Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham increasing contacts to sign Juventus and USA midfielder Weston McKennie

Tottenham Hotspur are ‘increasing their contacts with the intermediaries’ to sign Juventus and the USA midfielder Weston McKennie, as per Italian outlet Tuttosport (h/t the Express).

McKennie has been a name linked with us throughout the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. It’s not crazy to think that Spurs would have been closely following McKennie in the United States’ opening two World Cup games.

Since they are interested in the midfielder, it’s best to lay down the foundations for a deal as soon as possible. Otherwise, suitors can line up if he continues to impress in Qatar.

He wasn’t world-class in the games against Wales and England but he was one of the best players on the pitch for his team. He can play as a central midfielder as well as a right-sided midfielder.

McKennie has the dribbling, passing, and defensive abilities to be a serious threat to Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in Spurs’ starting XI. If not that, he will give manager Antonio Conte more options.

McKennie is a competent contender to play in a midfield three – as we did earlier this season whenever more than one of our first-choice attackers were sidelined with injuries. Playing as a right-sided central midfielder seems like a good idea for him in that system.

Or, he could be deployed as a right-sided wing-back. He may not have rapid pace or the agility needed to take on and beat full-backs at will, but his passing ability can give us more control down that side.

If the Lilywhites have increased contacts with intermediaries for him, then this can only be good news for our fans. It means Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici are looking to strengthen the team and turn to Juventus once again – where Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski, and Bentancur played before coming to Spurs.

We can watch him in action tonight, as he is expected to start for the USA when they take on Iran in a game that will be vital for their qualification hopes for the last 16.
