According to SPORT, Frenkie de Jong’s renewed interest in extending his stay at FC Barcelona is directly linked to the club’s promising project under new manager Hansi Flick.

A year ago, De Jong was firmly against a contract renewal, frustrated by the club’s handling of his situation and the sporting direction. Now, however, the Dutch midfielder appears to have had a complete change of heart.

Barcelona had faced significant hurdles in convincing the 28-year-old to commit to a new deal. At one point, his refusal to enter negotiations threatened to push him toward the exit door.

However, several things have changed in recent months, most notably, De Jong’s return from injury and his consistent run of form under Flick.

Important player for Flick

The German coach has wasted no time showing his faith in De Jong, making him a regular starter and a key part of his tactical setup.

That trust has made a clear impact. As the season concluded, De Jong played some of his best football, silencing critics and reasserting his influence in midfield.

Flick is understood to have already communicated to the club’s sporting management that keeping De Jong is a non-negotiable part of his vision for Barça.

Barcelona have taken positive steps

As a result, the club has moved quickly to try to secure De Jong’s future. Deco has already met with the player’s representatives, offering a three-year renewal deal.

Financially, the offer matches De Jong’s current earnings, reportedly between €18 and €19 million gross per season and the player is now seriously considering the offer.

While he had previously resisted talks, the transformation under Flick has clearly impressed him. For De Jong, the sporting project is just as important as the money.

And with Flick’s arrival bringing a more structured and competitive edge to the team, he sees the club heading in the right direction.
