Transfer News: Liverpool will make a move for Saul Niguez provided they can sell another midfielder

According to The Daily Mail, Liverpool remain interested in Saul Niguez. However, they will make a move to land him only if they sell another midfielder.

This could pave the way for arch-rivals Manchester United to make their move for the player. The Red Devils have already landed Jadon Sancho and are now eyeing a midfielder. Whether this is as a replacement for Paul Pogba or an addition to his presence remains to be seen.

At 26, Saul is at an age where he is arguably in his prime years and can still play at the top level for a long time to come. As per the report, Atletico are ready to sell the player for around £45m.

The Reds have already lost Georginio Wijnaldum this summer. The prospect of not bringing in a mother midfielder is a risky proposition. Liverpool did the same last summer following Dejan Lovren’s exit and the decision came back to bite us.

While we were able to issue a late rallying call and finish in the top four, the club will do well not to repeat the same mistake again. One could argue that the return of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can compensate for Wijnaldum’s loss.

While the duo may make up numbers, their injury record remains a concern. Moreover, they both perform a role that is entirely different from the one Wijnaldum performed. Strength in depth is key if we are to compete on multiple fronts and missing out on Saul could prove disastrous.

The prospect of United trumping us to the Spaniard is a sobering thought. The Red Devils will then have, at least on paper, a squad capable of challenging us and Manchester City for the title. They could also arguably go into the campaign possessing better squad depth.

Liverpool face a pivotal season that could put their ageing squad to the test. While a number of players are still in their prime, it is essential that the club put in the legwork for continued success. The last thing we want to do is turn into another Arsenal.
