Manchester United turned down the chance to sign Real Madrid flop Luka Jovic

According to the reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United were offered a chance to take Luka Jovic on loan.

The 23-year-old moved to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2019 after an impressive couple of seasons on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt. He has however failed to replicate the same form at Madrid and has struggled to impress

Jovic is now close to returning to Frankfurt on loan until the end of the season. It remains to be seen if a return to familiar hunting grounds rekindles the Serbian’s career.

The 23-year-old scored 36 goals in 75 games for the Eagles, leading them to the 2018 DFB Pokal- their first major honour in 30 years. Frankfurt are just five points off the top four and getting back their ace could help them rise up the table.

Despite his difficulties, both Perez and Zidane were willing to keep faith in the Serbian international. Whether this loan signifies that faith reaching an impasse remains to be seen.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was keen on the player. However, that train now appears to have left the station.

Off-field controversies

Jovic is also a handful off the pitch. The Real team was ordered to go into self-isolation after a member of their basketball team tested positive for Covid-19. The 22-year-old made the poorly thought out decision to fly home to Serbia before curbs were lifted. He later apologised for his transgression.

Jovic later decided to fly home to Serbia in violation to the country’s lockdown rules. This led him to be censured by Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and President Aleksander Vucic. (h/t The Mirror)

Missing out on Jovic could be a boon for United. He has not just failed to perform on the pitch but has caused undeeded controversy off it. The club will do well to focus on role models both on and off the field.
