Manchester United will need to pay Edinson Cavani ‘penalty’ if his contract is not renewed

Manchester United are yet to make a decision on the future of veteran striker Edinson Cavani.

The 34-year-old joined the Red Devils originally on a one-year deal on summer deadline day last year. The club does however retain the option to extend it until 2022.

Doing so would help us retain the services of a player who despite entering his mid-thirties but remains a dependable goalscorer. Not doing so could not just lose us the player but also hamper us financially.

According to ESPN, the club will have to pay Cavani a termination package of £1.7m if no renewal is offered. However, the player is free to end the association from his end, this particular clause only kicks in if United are the ones seeking a parting.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that he plans to hold talks with the player regarding his future. His penchant for scoring important goals has been a massive boost to the United frontline, especially so given Anthony Martial’s struggles.

Keen to stay!

Cavani for his part is happy at United and is keen to stay put. According to the report, the player is keen to extend his United deal despite interest from Boca Juniors.

The club for their part are set to make a decision once the player returns from his knee injury. If Solskjaer’s word is anything to go by, the Uruguayan is a doubt for this weekend against Chelsea.
