Ole Gunnar Solskjaer unhappy with Manchester United board over the unaddressed need for a midfielder this summer

According to the Manchester Evening News (h/t The Express), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ‘privately’ unhappy with the Manchester United board after failing to sign a midfielder this summer.

The Red Devils shelled out the big bucks again this summer as they brought Raphael Varane from Real, Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, and Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus. Thus, all in all, it is as good as a transfer window gets.

However, despite what would be a blockbuster window for most clubs in the world, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be displeased with the board as they could not sign a midfielder before the end of the transfer window.

While United do possess Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek, Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay, and Fred in their midfield line, the problems are very evident.

The partnership of McTominay and Fred has failed to provide the backline with sufficient protection while Matic is ageing and will be out of contract in 2023.

Pogba, for all his attacking exploits, has suffered defensively and could leave the club on the expiry of his contract while Van de Beek has struggled for game-time. Thus, it makes sense why the addition of a central midfielder could have done wonders for the Old Trafford outfit.

In fact, Rennes’ Eduardo Camavinga, Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka, and West Ham United’s Declan Rice were linked with the club, but none of those deals failed to materialize. The option of signing Camavinga might also be unlikely now as he secured a move to Real Madrid in the summer.

The pressure is mounting on Solskjaer, and the lack of adding another player in the centre of the pitch could prove to be the difference-maker in the big games and what could eventually cost the Norwegian his job.
