Liverpool Target ‘Crazy’ Defender as Zubimendi Chase Reignites

Slot Eyes Key Areas for Reinforcement

Liverpool’s resurgence under Arne Slot has been a major storyline this season, but even as a Premier League title challenge unfolds, planning for the next step is already underway.

According to GiveMeSport, the Reds are stepping up their interest in two key targets: Milos Kerkez and Martin Zubimendi. Both players are considered integral to Slot’s summer plans, with the recruitment team focused on reinforcing the defensive unit and resolving the ongoing lack of a specialist holding midfielder.

Kerkez Deal Looking More Likely

The left-back role has become an increasing priority at Anfield, with Andy Robertson’s long-term successor high on the agenda. Kerkez is at the top of Liverpool’s left-back shortlist, and GiveMeSport have now added: “Milos Kerkez looks increasingly likely to join from Bournemouth.”

The 21-year-old Hungarian international, previously described by former AZ teammate Mathew Ryan as “a crazy dude” who is “aggressive” and “powerful”, offers the kind of relentless dynamism Slot values in his full-backs.

While Real Madrid have also shown interest, Liverpool’s intent to move swiftly and decisively in the market may give them the edge.

Defensive Midfield Remains a Priority

Though Liverpool overhauled their midfield last summer, the absence of a natural defensive midfielder continues to be a gap in the squad. GiveMeSport noted: “Midfield saw a major overhaul last summer, but the one missing piece – a true defensive midfielder – was never properly addressed.”

With Wataru Endo providing short-term cover, the long-term solution could come in the form of Martin Zubimendi. Despite backing out of a move to Anfield last summer, the Real Sociedad star remains firmly on Liverpool’s radar.

Arsenal are also in the mix, but Liverpool are now being touted as a potential destination. Alternatives such as Angelo Stiller (Stuttgart) and Carlos Baleba (Brighton) are also being tracked.

Summer Strategy Taking Shape

While attention rightly remains on the title race, Liverpool’s recruitment department are already mapping out their summer priorities. A new centre-back, additional full-back depth, and a commanding defensive midfielder all feature on the radar.

With players like Jorrel Hato, David Hancko, and Antonee Robinson also under consideration, the message is clear: Liverpool are preparing to evolve once more.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

This is exactly the kind of news Liverpool fans want to hear at this point in the season. We’re in a title race, flying under Arne Slot, and already laying the groundwork for the next chapter. That’s the mark of a well-run football club.

The mention that Milos Kerkez “looks increasingly likely to join” is exciting. He’s got a bite and energy about him—everything we’ve loved about Robertson, but with room to grow. The fact that Real Madrid are also circling tells you all you need to know about his pedigree.

Then there’s the Zubimendi situation. Many fans were gutted when he didn’t join last summer, but hope is clearly not lost. If we can edge out Arsenal and finally bring in a true holding midfielder, it would complete the midfield puzzle.

Slot is building something with identity and balance. These are not headline-grabbing superstar names, but they’re smart, well-scouted options with a real purpose behind each target.

Liverpool aren’t just reacting anymore—they’re planning like contenders.
