Leeds United made it 11 wins out of their last 12 matches in the Sky Bet Championship, scoring a goal in each half away at Sheffield Wednesday.

Patrick Bamford found the net for the opener at Hillsborough, before Willy Gnonto was then on hand to finish calmly in the second half, to secure the three points.

The first chance of the game came the way of the home side. From a corner into the box, the ball bounced kindly for Djeidi Gassama who turned well and struck on target, but Illan Meslier produced a top-class save to turn the ball wide of the post.

A first big opening for Leeds came for Georginio Rutter. Ethan Ampadu played a clever ball over the home defence and Georginio collected, before James Beadle narrowed the angle and saved well. The follow up chance was also then cleared away.

Another chance followed shortly after, from a set-play. Crysencio Summerville whipped the corner into the box and Georginio met it, but flicked his header over the bar.

Daniel Farke’s side had ended the half well and were rewarded on the stroke of half-time, by taking the lead at Hillsborough!

Some clever build up play between Summerville and Glen Kamara saw the midfielder play the ball wide for Junior Firpo, who superbly crossed into the box, finding Bamford who fired home at the back post!

The whistle for the break was blown shortly after and in what had been a relatively even first 45 minutes, the Whites had the lead to take back into their dressing room.

Out for the second half, the match got back underway under the lights, with neither side having made a change to their XI’s which had started the game.

Leeds had the first opening in the second 45 minutes. Kamara again was involved as he played Firpo, who then played Georginio. The Frenchman swivelled and shot in the box, but Beadle got down well to palm it clear.

In the 58th minute, the lead was doubled! Bamford cushioned a ball down to Georginio with his chest, allowing his fellow forward to play the ball over the top for Willy Gnonto. The Frenchman controlled, ran in on goal, and coolly slotted home!

Straight after the second, Leeds could have had a third. Georginio again heavily involved as he played it for Gnonto, who then threaded a pass to Summerville, but the winger was denied by an excellent save from Beadle.

Leeds had to be alert down the opposite end though and as Wednesday came close to pulling one back. Meslier saved a long range effort from Gassama, but on the follow up, sub Micheal Smith shot again, only to see Ampadu perfectly placed to clear off the line.

After a quiet start to the match, the Whites had worked themselves into a strong position and were able to retain the ball, to calm the game down and control it for the remainder.

Farke made changes in the final 10 minutes to see out the game, whereas opposite number Danny Rohl also looked to his bench to try and get back into it.

The whistle sounded to end what had been a tough test for the Whites, but it confirmed another big three points to tally as well.
