For Cody Gakpo, Wednesday night’s Champions League tie against PSV Eindhoven is more than just another game; it’s a journey back to where it all began. A player moulded in the shadows of Philips Stadion, Gakpo will step onto the pitch as a visitor for the first time in his career.
Gakpo’s connection to PSV is deeply personal. From his first trial with the club at the age of six to becoming a star who netted 55 goals in 159 appearances, his roots in Eindhoven run deep.
Speaking ahead of the game, the Liverpool forward admitted the experience will feel surreal. “It’s a beautiful moment, a special moment for me, of course. I’m looking forward to being on the pitch tomorrow.

“[It will be] pretty strange. I think I’ve never been in the away dressing room, so it will be the first time and on the other side of the walkout. So, different than I was used to.
“But when the game will start I think all those things will fade away and we all will be focused on the game.”
Arne Slot’s Liverpool side have already secured a place in the Champions League’s last 16 but remain keen to seal top spot in the league-phase standings. For Gakpo, the decision to travel wasn’t just tactical but deeply personal.

“I got the question from the manager [about staying at home] as well but I didn’t play one minute against Lille last week,” Gakpo revealed. “[And] also from the manager’s point of view [he knew] that I would probably like to come over here and get some minutes here. So, that’s why I’m here.”
Returning to Eindhoven, Gakpo hopes to feel the warmth of the PSV faithful who supported him throughout his formative years. “Hopefully [I get] a good reception from the fans. I think I always had a good connection with them, so I’m looking forward to seeing them again tomorrow.”
With Gakpo focused on helping Liverpool secure the win, the occasion promises to be an emotional yet professional affair—a poignant chapter in the story of a player who remains connected to the club that shaped him.
