Newcastle Push for Yoane Wissa Amid Isak Uncertainty

Newcastle United are preparing to up their bid for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa to over £30 million, as reported by Gary Jacob of The Times. Their earlier £25 million approach was rejected, but the Magpies remain determined to land the Congolese forward, who struck 19 Premier League goals and provided five assists last season.

Wissa, who turns 29 in September, has only a year left on his contract — though Brentford can extend it until 2027. The Bees are reportedly holding out for around £40 million and have been eyeing Bournemouth’s Dango Ouattara as a potential replacement.

Wissa’s Willingness to Move

It’s understood that “Wissa… wants to join Newcastle and personal terms are not thought to be an issue.” That eagerness to make the switch could be crucial in negotiations.

Eddie Howe’s squad is stretched in attack, with William Osula currently the only alternative to Alexander Isak. Newcastle have already invested heavily in Anthony Elanga, signing the winger for £52 million from Nottingham Forest, but a proven Premier League goalscorer remains high on the wishlist.

Isak’s Stand-off Overshadows Preparations

Howe is also managing the tense situation with Alexander Isak following Liverpool’s rejected £110 million bid. The striker has expressed his desire to leave, trained separately from the group, and missed a family-invited session at the training ground.

Howe admitted: “It’s probably been the most high-profile issue I’ve dealt with in my managerial career… The group’s been disrupted of course.” He stressed that “the most important thing is the team, not any one individual” and refused to rule out Isak featuring again, but confirmed he is unlikely to face Aston Villa in the opening fixture.

Brentford’s Replacement Hunt

Brentford are tracking Dango Ouattara, who scored seven league goals for Bournemouth last season. The 23-year-old winger has made his intentions clear to explore other options, potentially smoothing the path for Wissa’s exit if terms can be agreed.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Newcastle fan’s perspective, this is a situation laced with both opportunity and frustration. On one hand, Yoane Wissa is exactly the type of proven Premier League forward who can slot straight into the starting XI and deliver goals from day one. His tally of 19 goals last season is no fluke, and his versatility across the front line would be invaluable in a campaign that spans four competitions. The reported £30 million bid feels fair in today’s market, especially with just a year left on his deal, but Brentford’s £40 million stance means negotiations could drag on.

The bigger concern is the Isak saga. His form and finishing last season were top-class, but his desire to leave has cast a shadow over the pre-season. Howe’s comments about disruption to the group are telling — the unity and togetherness that have been the backbone of Newcastle’s recent success are under threat. Fans will be hoping for a swift resolution, whether that means reintegrating him or cashing in to reinvest.

With the Aston Villa opener looming, supporters will be looking for clarity on the squad’s attacking options. Securing Wissa quickly could inject fresh optimism and ease the reliance on Isak, while also signalling that Newcastle can still attract top-tier talent despite the current turbulence.
