Conor Gallagher’s move to Atletico Madrid last summer was supposed to represent a fresh start. After being deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea, the £34 million transfer to La Liga came with the promise of regular minutes, top-level European competition and the opportunity to evolve into a central figure for Diego Simeone. Yet, one year on, the landscape appears significantly altered.
Despite featuring 50 times in his debut season, a large proportion of those appearances were from the bench. According to TEAMtalk, Gallagher “started just one of Atleti’s three matches in the recent Club World Cup. In that single start he was substituted at half time.” That moment spoke volumes about his current standing in Madrid.
The report reveals that Atletico are now prepared to sanction Gallagher’s exit if they can recoup their initial investment. The valuation sits at €40 million, roughly the same fee the Spanish giants paid Chelsea, a figure considered “reasonable” by club sources.
What’s more telling is Gallagher’s own desire to return to England. “Gallagher has been offered to several English clubs, including Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle,” with the 25-year-old reportedly instructing his representatives to explore Premier League options. As things stand, no club has made concrete advances, though “there is a real chance that Conor Gallagher could leave Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window.”
Newcastle’s interest in Gallagher is far from casual. Eddie Howe remains an admirer of the player, with his high-intensity pressing and tireless work rate aligning closely with Howe’s own tactical blueprint. With Newcastle returning to the Champions League this season, Gallagher’s combination of European experience and homegrown status could be a valuable asset.
TEAMtalk reports that Gallagher is “adored for his attitude and application at the club” in Madrid, attributes that would resonate deeply with the St James’ Park faithful. His dynamic style, engine and proven Premier League pedigree make him a natural fit for a team in transition, especially one that is expected to push on in Europe and domestically.
However, with no club yet to initiate serious talks, patience will be key. “At the moment the situation is calm, but talks could resume later this summer if one of the contacted clubs decides to make a further move.”
The financial aspect is likely to play a crucial role in this potential deal. Atletico’s openness to sell if a bid of around €40 million is received reflects both their desire to balance the squad and perhaps a quiet acknowledgement that Gallagher has not quite adapted as hoped.
That figure represents no profit but also no loss, which in itself suggests a willingness to draw a line under the experiment and move on. Crucially, the player himself “is now said to be keen to return to England, where he feels more comfortable.”
Newcastle, bolstered by Champions League qualification and increased commercial revenue, may view this as a strategic opportunity to reinforce their midfield with a player of proven quality at a manageable price.

As it stands, Gallagher’s future is unresolved. He remains under contract with Atletico and retains admirers in Spain. However, his ambition appears to lie back in the Premier League.
“Gallagher’s future is still to be decided, but a Premier League return remains a possibility and, above all, a wish from Conor, even if there are currently no clubs that have already shown concrete and immediate interest.”
Newcastle’s hierarchy, mindful of Financial Fair Play restrictions, may hesitate before committing to a significant outlay. However, if Atletico maintain their valuation and Gallagher maintains his openness to join a project like Eddie Howe’s, this could be a case of timing rather than doubt.
Should other midfield targets prove too costly or unavailable, Gallagher could well become a priority as the window progresses.
From a Newcastle supporter’s perspective, this link to Conor Gallagher makes a lot of sense. He brings Premier League experience, youthful energy and a relentless engine — exactly the kind of traits Eddie Howe values in a midfielder. The reported €40 million fee is not cheap, but it’s arguably a fair price for a player of his calibre and age, particularly one with European and international pedigree.
What’s appealing is Gallagher’s desire to return to England. That sense of unfinished business could align well with a fanbase that thrives on passion and work ethic. Gallagher’s high pressing and box-to-box style would slot seamlessly into the midfield alongside Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton, or even in rotation with them across different competitions.
While fans would prefer a marquee addition, someone like Gallagher brings guaranteed output and a strong mentality. It would not be a flashy signing, but a highly functional and pragmatic one. If this is a deal Newcastle can execute while staying compliant with FFP, it should be given serious consideration.
