Monaco weighing summer move

Journalist: According to reports from Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, corroborated by Florian Plettenburg, AS Monaco are assessing the prospect of a summer move for Newcastle Utd defender Kieran Trippier. The Ligue 1 side are said to be “very keen” on securing the services of the England international, with one year remaining on his current contract at St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s position appears measured. While there is no immediate desire to sell, the Magpies recognise that Trippier’s contract situation leaves them with a decision to make in the coming months. Any departure would require an offer that reflects his value both on and off the pitch.

Contract clock ticking

Trippier joined Newcastle in January 2022 as the first signing under the club’s new ownership, a move widely seen as a statement of intent. Since then, he has become a key figure under Eddie Howe, both for his defensive reliability and his influence in the dressing room.

Last season, the 34-year-old featured in 25 Premier League matches, continuing to contribute at a high level despite a campaign disrupted by injuries and fixture congestion. His set-piece delivery, leadership and tactical nous remain assets that Newcastle would be reluctant to part with.

With his deal expiring in the summer of 2026, Monaco’s interest poses a potential dilemma: whether to cash in now or risk losing the player for a reduced fee later.

Monaco’s ambitious transfer window

Monaco’s recruitment drive this summer has already drawn attention. The Principality club secured the signing of Eric Dier on a free transfer after his time with Bayern Munich, before completing a high-profile move for Paul Pogba from Juventus. They also struck a loan agreement with Barcelona for forward Ansu Fati, further underlining their intent to compete both domestically and in Europe.

Adding Trippier to that list would enhance Monaco’s defensive depth and provide valuable experience to a side aiming to challenge Paris Saint-Germain at the top of Ligue 1. The player’s familiarity with Dier from their Tottenham days may also be viewed as a positive factor in negotiations.

Decision looming for Newcastle Utd

Newcastle’s transfer activity this summer has been shaped by both ambition and the realities of financial regulations. Any significant incoming signings could depend on outgoings, and interest from Monaco places Trippier among those whose future could be shaped by budgetary considerations.

No formal bid has yet been lodged, but discussions within Monaco’s recruitment team are understood to be ongoing. Newcastle, meanwhile, continue to assess their squad options ahead of a challenging season domestically and in Europe.

While it remains to be seen whether Monaco can tempt Newcastle into parting with a player of Trippier’s stature, the prospect of a move adds intrigue to an already busy transfer market for both clubs.
