Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be set to recall his big guns for the weekend after resting them in midweek and Fernandes will be keen to make amends following the defeat to West Ham United.

Fernandes has been an excellent signing for United.

Fernandes has started the season strongly, scoring in both of United’s opening two league matches of the season. He also netted his first senior hat-trick in the opening day demolition of Leeds United at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old has an excellent record against Villa, scoring in all three meetings against the Midlands side in a United shirt. Interestingly all three were penalties, giving Fernandes a queer opportunity to match a rather interesting record.

Former Watford star Troy Deeney remains the only player who has scored more goals against an opponent with 100 per cent of them being penalties. Fernandes can match the veteran if he scores from the spot this Saturday.

While Fernandes will get his opportunities, the fact that he needs a penalty to make the record count is an issue. This is because of the return of Cristiano Ronaldo who is also expected to lay a stake to any spot-kicks United will win.

Whether the 26-year-old will make an exception for his international compatriot, should the occasion arrive remains to be seen.

Whether Fernandes scores or not, the onus is on United to get back to winning ways this weekend. Another loss will derail what has been a rather strong start to the season so far.
