Manchester United came close to signing Dayot Upamecano five years ago

According to The Sun, Manchester United came close to signing Dayot Upamecano five years ago.

The French international is one of the best young players in football. He has played a key role in RB Leipzig’s run to the Champions League semifinals last season.

Had things turned out differently, he could have been turning out this season in the famous red of United. All of it because of an extra £200,000.

Upamecano was at Old Trafford with his mum and agent as a deal was lined up with then club Valenciennes . The deal however fall apart over a small sum of money.

“Dayot wanted to join United and the fee really was nothing.”

Then just 16, Upamecano was keen to seal the transfer to one of the biggest clubs in world football. United were however willing to pay just £500,000 for his services instead of the £700,000 demanded by Valenciennes.

Despite his potential, the Red Devils deemed the price to be too high for the youngster.

Upamecano will however turn up at Old Trafford this week. United face RB Leipzig in their Champions League group stage match on the 28th.

The Frenchman will have an opportunity to showcase United chiefs exactly what they missed out on.

To add insult to injury, Liverpool have now been linked with a move for the imperious Frenchman. A potentially season-ending injury to Virgil van Dijk could force the Merseysiders to make a move for Upamecano.
