For Liverpool’s Luis Díaz, football has always been more than just a profession—it’s been about passion. And that passion, according to Mundo Deportivo, has long been painted in the colours of FC Barcelona. As the Catalan giants once again eye the Colombian winger for a summer move, his childhood dream may be set to clash with Liverpool’s carefully balanced rebuild under Arne Slot.
At 28, Díaz finds himself in his prime. With two years still to run on his contract, he remains an influential figure at Anfield, having played in 28 of Liverpool’s 29 Premier League games this season—22 of those as a starter—scoring nine goals. Slot rates him highly, and with Mohamed Salah edging ever closer to the exit door, Díaz’s presence feels more vital than ever.
Yet the lure of Camp Nou is real. “If Barça opens the door, the Colombian international wouldn’t hesitate to opt for the Blaugrana,” Mundo Deportivo reports. That admission—sourced close to the player—will concern Liverpool fans who have grown to admire Díaz’s flair, work rate and capacity for match-defining moments.
Barcelona’s ongoing battle with LaLiga’s financial fair play restrictions remains the greatest obstacle to signing Díaz. Having already fumbled high-profile transfer dealings—such as the Olmo debacle—they cannot afford another misstep. But the club’s interest is genuine. Díaz is once again on their list of offensive reinforcements, and if the numbers can be massaged, they are expected to make a play once the season ends.
“Luis Díaz is waiting for FC Barcelona to make a move to find out whether or not they will invest in him for next season,” the report continues. For now, the Colombian is adopting a patient stance, refusing to build hope until he sees a formal signal from his boyhood club. His connection to Barcelona is not superficial—it was fostered by his father, a lifelong fan of the Catalan side.
With Salah currently poised for the exit door, Liverpool must consider how best to replenish their attacking arsenal. Names like Alexander Isak have been linked, but deals at that level require significant outlay. A major sale may be the only viable solution—and Díaz, whether he likes it or not, is one of Liverpool’s most valuable assets.
Arne Slot, understandably, is opposed to the idea of losing the Colombian. The Dutchman has urged Liverpool’s hierarchy to retain him, recognising his balance of creativity and commitment. But if Isak or another elite forward is to arrive, finances must be managed—especially if Salah leaves on a free.
Adding further complexity is Saudi Arabia’s reported interest in Díaz, with Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sané mentioned as a possible replacement should Liverpool cash in. Such speculation highlights Díaz’s market value—and the potential domino effect should he depart.
For Liverpool fans, the Díaz situation is a tough one to digest. Here’s a player who gives everything in red—running the channels, tracking back etc—but whose heart might just belong elsewhere. No one faults a footballer for dreaming of Barça, especially when that dream began in childhood, but timing is everything.
Fans will also rightly ask—if Liverpool do sell Díaz, who replaces him? Sané would be a gamble. Isak is a quality centre-forward but wouldn’t offer Díaz’s wing profile. And even if funds were available, they’d need to land two top attackers, not one.
Ultimately, this is a moment for Liverpool to show ambition. If they believe in Arne Slot’s vision, they must back it—not by selling key players, but by building around them. Let Barça wait. Let Saudi wait. Keep Díaz unless the deal is truly transformative.
