Liverpool could reportedly be open to sacrificing one of their most talented young prospects in order to land a primary transfer target this summer.
Having already recruited in both full-back positions since the end of last season, the Reds are now seeking to bolster their centre-back options as they pursue a move for Marc Guehi, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that a ‘new round of talks’ are set to take place for the Crystal Palace defender in the coming days.
The Eagles could seek around £45m for the man who captained them to FA Cup final glory in May, although the Premier League champions are seemingly reluctant to pay that much for a player who’s now into the final year of his contract (Ben Jacobs).
However, Liverpool might yet have a different incentive to offer to the south London club in their efforts to strike a deal for the 24-year-old.
According to The Guardian, the Reds could be willing to offer Ben Doak to Palace as part of a proposed transaction which’d see Guehi coming to Anfield.
The Eagles had expressed an interest in signing the teenage Scottish forward in January, when he was on loan at Middlesbrough from the Merseyside giants.

Doak – who was hailed by BBC reporter Tom English for his ‘fearless‘ performances for his country last year – was spotted undergoing extra training in his homeland ahead of Liverpool’s return to Kirkby next week to begin pre-season preparations.
The 19-year-old will be eyeing an opportunity to impress Arne Slot ahead of the resumption of competitive action in August, but it’d probably take something special for him to break into renewed contention for a first-team place at Anfield for the upcoming campaign, particularly when he’s just come back from a lengthy injury.
However, it could be difficult for him to get into the Palace line-up in its current guise, as Oliver Glasner prefers a 3-4-2-1 formation with wing-back wizard Daniel Munoz having the freedom of the right flank, where the Scottish youngster primarily plays.
Including Doak as part of a deal to land Guehi could enable Liverpool to obtain the England defender without having to meet Palace’s valuation for him, but would the teenage attacker be open to a move to Selhurst Park if he’d struggle to get into the starting XI?
Maybe the Eagles boss does see a place for him in his setup if the south Londoners were trying to sign him in January, so it’s not implausible that a player-plus-cash deal could be arranged between the two clubs so that the Reds land their primary centre-back target.
It’ll be compelling to see if any such proposal is put on the table in the next few days.
