According to sources at Onze TV3, Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi is very close to accepting an offer from the club for a contract extension. The agreement for the deal is practically done and the announcement is reportedly imminent.

If true, it would serve as brilliant news for Barcelona fans around the world, after all the events that transpired at the tail end of the 2019-20 season. With the infamous burofax saga and the transition season of 2020-21 behind them, there is more optimism than ever regarding the Argentine’s future.

After Joan Laporta’s investiture for his second tenure as Barcelona president, he vowed that he would do everything in his power to ensure Messi stays at Barcelona and gets the farewell he deserves. That, being one of his biggest challenges as president, aside from the financial problems, is nearly complete.

The contract will reportedly have a duration of five years, but of those, two years will see him continue as a Barcelona player, following which he can continue to develop both his brand and the brand with the club but in a different capacity.

The reports highlight that the club want to make the renewal official as soon as Thursday, which will be Messi’s 34th birthday, which is in line with previous reports that stated they want to finalize everything by the 30th of June, when his current deal is set to expire.

There is plenty of buzz about the Argentine still, as certain people, including journalist Alfredo Martinez, state that while negotiations are progressing favourably, there is no definitive agreement between the parties yet. However, the prospect of Messi renewing certainly seems to be drawing closer.
