Expected to have a tight budget in the summer transfer window, Inter could turn to Roma’s Chris Smalling as a potential summer reinforcement.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports the Nerazzurri are unlikely to spend extravagantly in the upcoming market and will consider several “low-cost” transfer options—one of which could be the Englishman. Simone Inzaghi reportedly likes Smalling’s profile primarily due to his ability to play in either a three or four man defence.

The 34 year-old has played sparingly this season due to a persistent knee injury that kept him out of action for five months. It didn’t take long for him to suffer another injury setback—this time with his ankle.

On top of that, Smalling is also one of the team’s highest wage earners at nearly €4 million (net) per season on a contract that runs through June 2025. As a result, Roma are increasingly open to parting ways with the defender after the season.
