Hansi Flick’s first season in charge of the FC Barcelona team has been a truly memorable one for the Blaugrana fans. The team won all the big domestic titles, including the Spanish Super Cup, Copa del Rey, and La Liga, while also coming within a few minutes of securing a place in the UEFA Champions League final.

However, the Catalans were eliminated from the UCL at the semi-final stage, as Inter Milan won the tie in extra time. As a result, the La Liga title remains the most prestigious achievement of the German coach with Barcelona in his first season in charge.

Barcelona get more points on the road

Talking about this league title, Mundo Deportivo has highlighted one particular aspect that makes this La Liga win a unique one in the Blaugrana club’s history.

Barcelona ended their domestic league campaign with 88 points, having won 28 matches, drawn 4, and lost 6. But the fact that makes this La Liga triumph special is that the team won more points while playing away from home than it did playing at their home ground of Montjuic.

In total, the Catalans won 43 points while playing in front of their fans at the Olympic Stadium. On the other hand, they won 45 points on the road while playing in front of opposition fans. This is the first time Barcelona have won a league title by getting more points away from home than they did at their own stadium.

Two similar instances in Blaugrana history

However, there are two other instances of the Blaugrana team getting more or equal league points away from home than at their stadium in their history.

One campaign in which this happened was in the 2020-21 season, when the team led by Ronald Koeman got 41 points from away games and 38 points from home games. However, it was Atletico Madrid who won the league title that year.

Then, in the 2003-04 season under Frank Rijkaard, the team took equal points both on the road and at their home, i.e., 36. However, Valencia won the title that season.

Thus, this unique aspect of the La Liga win goes on to show the ability of this Barcelona team, led by Hansi Flick, to perform in high-pressure situations, which is one factor that made them so successful.
