However, as clubs one by one began to withdraw from the proposal amid fan backlash, Woodward decided to call time on his career at Manchester United.

As per the report, the former accountant and investment banker, who had been with the club since 2005, has confided to close ones that supporting the European Super League was one of the biggest mistakes of his professional career.

It is also said that he felt great remorse over the entire development which is why he decided to resign. However, Manchester United owner Joel Glazer was desperate for Woodward to continue at the club.

It is no secret that the Glazers and Woodward have a strong relationship, with the latter having played a major role in their takeover of the club back in 2005. And Joel Glazer made one last desperate plea to stop Woodward from leaving, but to no avail.
