Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Jules Kounde, in addition to the club’s pursuit of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

United have held talks with Varane over a move to the Premier League with the France international the Red Devils’ leading defensive target, though reports have now emerged that the club are considering a swoop for a second centre-back addition.

According to the Mail, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are also preparing an offer for Sevilla star Kounde, who has been on the radar of some of Europe’s leading clubs following an exciting emergence in Spain.

Kounde is believed to be valued at around £50m by Sevilla and his versatility in being able to play both centrally and at right-back is said to appeal to the United hierarchy.

Manchester City are understood to have seen an approach for the 22-year-old rejected last summer, whilst Real Madrid, Chelsea and Tottenham have all been linked with the defender – although he reportedly shunned a move to Spurs amid his ambition to play in the Champions League.

Having already forked out £73 million to sign Jadon Sancho last week, it remains to be seen as to whether the Red Devils would have the finances to fund a move for Kounde, given the club are also interested in signing Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier as well as a new central midfielder.

Reports this weekend suggested United were edging closer to an agreement with Real Madrid over Varane, with suggestions the deal will cost between £39m and £47m for the 28-year-old, who has entered the final season of his contract at the Bernabeu.

Varane is keen on a new challenge in the Premier League after a decade with Los Blancos, a period in which the centre-back has won three league titles and four Champions League winners’ medals.
