Report: Chelsea watch 10 assist, €50m star; one reason he might not join

Marc Cucurella has established himself as one of the Premier League’s better left backs, despite a rocky start to his Chelsea career.

He’s not the perfect player but he does offer a lot in certain aspects, and manager Enzo Maresca seems to be a huge fan of his. The money spent on him was big – but it seems it’s gradually being paid back as he establishes himself.

His backup from the first half of the season, Renato Veiga, has gone on loan, and while there’s some talk about him returning in the summer, we can’t see it happening. The reasoning for his departure was that he wanted to play more in the build up to next summer’s World Cup, so coming back to Chelsea this summer doesn’t make much sense if he’s not going to be first choice at left back or centre back.

Top tier option may be too good to be a backup

That leaves us short on the left, and one name that’s likely to come up more and more often is another player competing with Cucurella as one of the league’s best options at left back: Antonee Robinson.

CaughtOffside today have an exclusive which claims Liverpool are “showing a strong interest” in the full back, who has picked up a crazy 10 assists already this season. A price of €50m is mentioned.

Chelsea are also apparently “on alert” after his latest good showings. We would love to sign him, we just have one doubt – is he too good to be Cucurella’s backup? With the Spaniard already in place, it seems hard to justify another major transfer spend and wage commitment on a player who wouldn’t necessarily be first choice.

It’s certainly a move to watch and a player we expect to be on the move.
