Bournemouth Pursue Chelsea’s Petrovic in Goalkeeping Shake-Up

Talks Continue Over Petrovic Transfer

Bournemouth are locked in negotiations with Chelsea over a potential deal for goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, according to Sky Sports News’ Mark McAdam and Kaveh Solhekol. Talks are focused on the structure of the Cherries’ proposal, with Chelsea reportedly holding out for more guaranteed payments instead of incentive-based bonuses.

Petrovic, 25, has caught attention despite a limited run of games at Stamford Bridge, and Sky Sports reports that the Serbian international is keen on the move to the south coast. That level of interest is bound to encourage Bournemouth, who are keen to bolster their goalkeeping options ahead of the new Premier League season.

Chelsea, however, are standing firm. As reported, the Blues “want at least £25m” for the player they signed from MLS side New England Revolution. While Bournemouth may prefer a more staggered payment structure, Chelsea’s desire for more upfront money may prove a stumbling block.

Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Picture and Petrovic’s Role

Djordje Petrovic was brought in the summer of 2023 as cover following the departure of Edouard Mendy. With Kepa Arrizabalaga loaned to Real Madrid and Robert Sánchez struggling with fitness, Petrovic found himself thrown into action and handled the pressure admirably. He finished the season with a respectable 13 appearances in all competitions.

His shot-stopping ability, commanding presence, and composure with the ball at his feet have made him a valuable asset, even in a crowded Chelsea squad. But with Enzo Maresca  in charge and looking to streamline his team, Chelsea seem open to letting Petrovic go—provided their financial terms are met.

Why Bournemouth Want Petrovic

Bournemouth’s pursuit of Petrovic makes strategic sense. Manager Andoni Iraola favours playing out from the back, and Petrovic’s comfort on the ball suits that philosophy. At 25, he also fits the club’s vision of investing in young, high-upside players with room to develop.

The Cherries will be looking to build on a mid-table finish last season, and adding a Premier League-experienced keeper is a clear signal of intent. If a deal can be struck, Petrovic could very well become their No. 1 in the long term.

Financial Hurdles Still Remain

As it stands, both clubs remain apart on payment terms. Chelsea want more cash upfront, while Bournemouth are negotiating for flexibility. “The conversations centre around the structure of Bournemouth’s offer,” as Sky Sports makes clear. Given Chelsea’s FFP situation and desire to balance the books, it’s understandable why they’re holding out for guaranteed money.

Still, with Petrovic reportedly eager to make the switch, and Bournemouth clearly keen, there’s growing optimism that a middle ground can be reached before the window closes.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Bournemouth fan’s perspective, the potential arrival of Djordje Petrovic would be a welcome and ambitious move. It signals a shift from simply surviving in the top flight to actually thriving in it. Last season highlighted the need for consistency and reliability between the sticks—something Petrovic could bring.

Many fans would recall moments where goalkeeping uncertainty cost vital points. Petrovic’s arrival could stabilise that area and offer a long-term solution. His age is ideal; experienced enough to start immediately, but young enough to grow with the team. Plus, he’s already adapted to the pace of the Premier League—a box that not all foreign goalkeepers can tick.

Some supporters may feel uneasy about the reported £25m fee. For a club like Bournemouth, that’s a substantial investment. However, in today’s market, quality goalkeepers don’t come cheap—and if Petrovic can add 10-12 points over a season through saves, leadership and composure, then it’s arguably money well spent.

There’s also belief in Iraola’s project. He’s shown promise in implementing a more progressive style of play, and Petrovic fits that mould. Fans will hope that the club backs him with the right pieces. If the Petrovic deal goes through, it would show the Cherries mean business heading into 2025.
